A vison exam is a general wellness check of the ocular health of your eyes. During a wellness exam the doctor will screen your eyes for glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and other eye diseases as well as perform a refraction (the test to determine your eyeglass prescription). If the doctor sees something that requires further testing, the testing and management of that condition will be billed to your medical insurance. Your VISION plan will not cover any MEDICAL diagnoses (such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye exams) and your MEDICAL plan will not cover any VISION diagnoses (such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism).
We all probably remember our grandparents wearing eyeglasses with a line on the bottom portion of their lenses. "Bi" means two and these lenses give clear vison at only two distances, usually distance and near but no vision for intermediate viewing (computer viewing). A progressive lens or no line bifocal has no line separating the distance viewing area of the lens from the near viewing area of the lens. A progressive lens has a seamless transition from distance to intermediate to near. This provides clear vison at all distances much like your own natural vision.
A contact lens is classified as a medical device that sits on the front surface of the eye. During a contact lens evaluation the doctor will make sure the lens is fitting your eye properly and will evaluate your vision through the contact lenses. A poorly fitting lens may feel okay in your eye but long term complications can arise. In the state of PA, contact lens prescriptions are good for a maximum of one year or less if the doctor has a medical reason for writing the script for less than the maximum allowed amount of time.
Vision screeings at school do not take the place of a dilated fundus exam. Vison screenings can detect children who are in need of glasses. Think about it...if the world to you always looked blurry, to you it is normal. Often children are not aware that they should be seeing clearer. So the school screening can get the conversation started and can help initiate an eye exam. Some children pass school screenings but are farsighted (straining to see in the distance and straining more for near) and require glasses for near work, some children fail school screenings and do not require glasses at all. It is best to have a comprehensive eye exam to determine if your child needs glasses. We know when children see better they can perform better in school.
In most cases, medical insurance or vision plans do not cover 100% of services rendered or products dispensed.
Each medical insurance is different and many services received are subject to deductibles and coinsurance which are the responsibility of the patient. With vision plans, there are co-pays for eyeglass lenses and frames which are set by your vision plan and these are the member's responsibility.
Good vison is not always an indicator of good ocular health. There are eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration which in the early stages do not appear to affect your vision. Just like high blood pressure which you cannot feel, if left untreated over time can put stress on your kidneys, heart. the small blood vessels in your eye and even your optic nerve! Early intervention before a problem becomes larger is the key to ensuring healthy eyes and good vision.
